Description
Our home distilling kit is designed so that if you use our 50% alcohol, when you dilute back to the original quantity after distillation you should end up with around 43% alcohol by volume.
If you want to take it to the next level, an alcohol hydrometer is the way to go. Then you can measure your alcohol content and dilute back to exactly the strength you want.
Our hydrometer kit comes with three hydrometers so you can measure the alcohol content from between 0 and 100%. There is also a thermometer as for true accuracy you should measure the temperature and adjust the reading using the tables provided.
To dilute your alcohol back to your desired strength the formula for the amount of water to add is:
((volume of alcohol you collected x ABV after distillation)/(desired alcohol ABV)) – volume of alcohol you collected
For example, if you collected 450ml of gin and measured that at 70% ABV then to make that 43% the formula is ((450 x 0.7)/0.43) – 450 so you need to add 283 ml water to make a total volume of 732ml gin at 43% alcohol by volume.
